Hand-troweled mortar systems are a specialized craft. Pacific Coast Contracting installs specially formulated troweled mortars to restore and protect older, worn surfaces, and as protective overlays on new floors in heavy-duty areas.
What troweled mortars are
Troweled mortars are epoxy or urethane resin systems filled with aggregate and applied by hand trowel. They are much thicker than standard floor coatings, typically ranging from 1/8" to 1/4", which gives them more body to handle impact and to resurface worn concrete.
Epoxy and urethane mortar systems offer high resistance to impact, abrasion, thermal shock and chemicals, depending on the product, and with proper maintenance they are built for long service in demanding environments.

Troweled mortars are used in heavy-duty areas such as food and beverage processing, manufacturing and production floors, loading and forklift areas, commercial kitchens and areas that see hot washdown.

Troweled epoxy and urethane mortar systems are typically 1/8" to 1/4" thick, much thicker than standard floor coatings. The added thickness helps the floor handle impact, abrasion and heavy traffic and allows the system to resurface worn concrete. Pacific Coast Contracting recommends a thickness based on how the floor is used.
When should I choose a troweled mortar instead of a floor coating?
Troweled mortars are usually considered when a floor sees heavy impact, forklift traffic, thermal shock from hot washdown, or when the existing concrete is too worn for a thin coating. Lighter-duty areas are often well served by a seamless epoxy or urethane coating. Pacific Coast Contracting can assess the floor and recommend a system.
Can a troweled mortar repair an old, damaged floor?
Yes. Pacific Coast Contracting uses specially formulated troweled mortars to restore and protect older, worn surfaces. After preparation and repairs, the mortar is applied by hand trowel to rebuild the surface. The condition of the slab still has to be evaluated first, including moisture and any structural issues.
